Bulgaria: Further protests possible across country following widespread July 31 and Aug. 1 demonstrations denouncing violence against women
Additional protests possible across Bulgaria following July 31-Aug. 1 demonstrations. Heightened security, transport disruptions possible.
Event
Further protests are possible across Bulgaria over the coming days following a series of demonstrations that took place July 31 and Aug. 1. Protests condemning violence against women materialized in at least 30 cities, including Sofia, Stara Zagora, Varna, and Burgas, in reaction to a high-profile assault of an 18-year-old Stara Zagora resident by her partner. The gatherings drew between 7,000 and 8,000 participants in some locations; however, it was not immediately clear how large future protests may be.
Transport disruptions are possible during any demonstrations that may materialize. Authorities may deploy additional security in the vicinity of any protests. While such gatherings will probably remain largely peaceful, isolated clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid protest areas as a general precaution. Plan for potential delays if traveling through areas such as city or town centers where protests may occur. Leave the area at the first sign of a security disturbance. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
