DRC: Anti-MONUSCO protests possible in North Kivu Province through early September
Anti-MONUSCO protests are possible in North Kivu Province, DRC, through early September despite a ban on public gatherings.
Event
Protests denouncing the presence of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) are possible in North Kivu Province, particularly the city of Goma, through early September despite a ban on public gatherings. Local activists regularly demand MONUSCO withdraw from the region due to their perceived inability to maintain security. On Aug. 30, demonstrators attempted to enter the MONUSCO base in Goma before being repelled by security forces. At least ten people died in the clashes, and over 150 were arrested. Some reports claim that as many as 48 people were killed in the incident.
Authorities will likely maintain an increased security posture across the province, particularly in Goma, as a precaution over the coming weeks. Police forces will almost certainly monitor any protests that may materialize and could resort to using force to disperse demonstrators. Clashes are possible.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately, and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Strictly heed the instructions of local security personnel. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
