DRC: Protesters block main roads in Goma, North Kivu Province, Aug. 17

Students and other activists are protesting in Goma, North Kivu Province, early Aug. 17. The demonstrators are demanding the release of students who have been kidnapped in the city. According to initial reports, the protesters are blocking main roads in the city and causing businesses and transportation disruptions. Hundreds of people are reportedly gathering near the Airtel telecommunications building. Police officers are being deployed to clear the roads and have reportedly fired warning shots.

An increased security presence is likely in the city in the coming hours. Further protests are possible. Clashes between security forces and protesters are possible should protesters ignore police orders to disperse.
