Suspected militants ambushed a military patrol in Anzourou, Tillaberi Region, on Aug. 20. The attack left at least 12 soldiers dead. There have been no claims of responsibility. Al-Qaeda affiliates are suspected. These militants claimed a similar attack that left at least 17 soldiers dead in Koutougou, Tillaberi, near the Malian border on Aug. 15.

Due to a recent uptick in attacks, authorities will likely maintain an elevated security presence in the region. Authorities could impose enhanced security measures, including movement restrictions, vehicle checks, curfews, and/or bans on public gatherings. Further armed attacks and clashes are possible.

Anzourou is about 170 km (105 miles) northwest of Niamey.
