Niger: Militants ambush soldiers near Sanam, Tillaberi Region, Aug. 13

Event

Militants ambushed a military patrol near Sanam, Tillaberi Region, around 11:00 Aug. 13. According to military officials, six soldiers died in the attack. Earlier on Aug. 9, at least five soldiers were killed in another incident near Sanam. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Increased security and localized disruptions are likely in the coming days. Authorities could impose enhanced security measures, including movement restrictions, vehicle checks, curfews, and/or bans on public gatherings. Further armed attacks and clashes are possible.

Sanam is 275 km (171 miles) northeast of Tillaberi.
