Somalia: Further protests possible in Mogadishu following protests Aug. 20

Further protests possible in Mogadishu, Somalia, following protests Aug. 20 Heightened security likely; violence possible

Warning

Event

Further protests are possible in Mogadishu after protests occurred in the city Aug. 20. Hundreds of protesters were denouncing the Aug. 19 arrest of militia leader Sheegow Ahmed Ali; authorities arrested Sheegow and approximately 25 of his militiamen after the latter clashed with police overnight Aug. 18-19, leaving at least three people dead. Although the exact cause of the clashes is unclear, it reportedly occurred after police arrested two of Sheegow's men for an unknown reason.

Given that Sheegow remains in custody and will almost certainly face criminal charges relating to the violence, further protests by his supporters cannot be discounted, though the exact level of support he garners in Mogadishu is unclear. Authorities will likely deploy additional personnel in the event further protests occur. Localized disruptions are likely in the vicinity of any protests. Violence is possible should security personnel move to disperse protesters, or protesters become overly disruptive.

Advice

Avoid any demonstrations that occur. Allow additional time to reach destinations near rally sites. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest activity. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
