Lingering disruptions likely following major Aug. 31 building fire in central Johannesburg, South Africa.
Event
Localized disruptions are likely in parts of Johannesburg's central business district (CBD) over the coming days as authorities continue their investigation into a major structure fire that occurred in the city's Marshalltown neighborhood Aug. 31. At least 73 people died and over 50 others were injured in the blaze. The building, located at the intersection of Delvers and Albert streets, had been abandoned by its owner and was serving as informal housing for about 200 residents. The cause of the fire remains unclear.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the scene until on-site investigation work is complete. Authorities may restrict access to nearby roads or evacuate nearby buildings out of an abundance of caution.
Advice
Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes and allow additional travel time to nearby destinations. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by local law enforcement officers.
