UK: Authorities responding to fire at sports center in south Bristol Aug. 9

Emergency crews are responding to a fire at the former Whitechurch Sports Center in Balmfield, south Bristol, on Aug. 9. The fire caused a large plume of smoke. Police have deployed increased security and cordoned off the surrounding residential area; evacuations are ongoing. There have as yet been no reports of casualties.

Localized transport disruptions are likely in the coming hours as emergency operations continue. The smoke from the fire may noticeably worsen air quality in parts of Bristol through Aug. 9.
