UK: Unionized Gatwick Airport ground staff strikes originally planned for Aug. 18-21 canceled; strikes still possible Aug. 22-28. /update 1
Unionized ground staff at London Gatwick Airport, UK, cancel strikes planned for Aug. 18-21; strikes may still occur Aug. 22-28.
Event
Ground staff and baggage handlers represented by the Unite labor union canceled strikes at London Gatwick Airport (LGW) originally slated for Aug. 18-21. The purpose of the suspension is to give workers at the two affected companies - Wilson James and Red Handling - an opportunity to vote on new salary offers from their respective employers. If they fail to accept the new offer, Wilson James employees will strike Aug. 22-24, and Red Handling employees will strike 00:01 Aug. 25-23:59 Aug. 28. Red Handling provides ground services for Norse Atlantic (N0), Norwegian Air Norway (DH), Delta (DL), TAP Air Portugal (TP), and Saudia (SV).
Unless fully averted, any strike that takes place will likely disrupt flight check-in and baggage processing, particularly for airlines serviced by Red Handling. Flight disruptions due to passenger delays may also occur. Picketing may occur at or near the airport.
Advice
Arrive at the airport early to allow extra time for check-in and baggage handling; contact the travel service provider to confirm flight schedules. Avoid protests as a standard precaution. Monitor local sources for updates.
