UK: Unionized Gatwick Airport ground staff strikes slated for Aug. 18-28
Unionized ground staff at London Gatwick Airport, UK, plan strikes for Aug. 18-28. Airport processing and flight disruptions likely.
Event
Ground staff and baggage handlers represented by the Unite labor union plan to stage a series of strikes at London Gatwick Airport (LGW) Aug. 18-28 in order to press for wage increases. Employees of Red Handling, a company that handles operations for Norse Atlantic (N0), Norwegian Air Norway (DH), Delta (DL), TAP Air Portugal (TP), and Saudia (SV), will strike 00:01 Aug. 18-23:59 Aug. 21 and then 00:01 Aug. 25-23:59 Aug. 28. Employees of Wilson James will strike 00:01 Aug. 18-23:59 Aug. 20 and again 00:01 Aug. 22-23:59 Aug. 24. The union leaders estimate that 216 flights could be disrupted, potentially impacting about 45,000 passengers.
Unless averted, the strike will likely result in disruptions to flight check-in and baggage processing, particularly for airlines serviced by Red Handling. Flight disruptions due to passenger delays may also occur. Picketing may occur at or near the airport.
Advice
Arrive at the airport early to allow extra time for check-in and baggage handling; contact the travel service provider to confirm flight schedules. Avoid protests as a standard precaution.
