Afghanistan, Pakistan: Officials reopen Torkham border crossing as of Sept. 15 /update 2
Officials reopen Torkham border crossing in Afghanistan and Pakistan as of Sept. 15. Residual transportation disruptions likely.
Event
Officials have reopened the Torkham border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan as of Sept. 15. The border crossing closed Sept. 6 after security forces on both sides exchanged fire in response to allegations that Taliban authorities had unilaterally begun constructing a new checkpoint near Torkham. The resultant cross-border closure has resulted in associated transport and business disruptions.
Authorities will likely maintain heightened security measures around the checkpoint. Lingering transport disruptions are likely in the coming days as traffic normalizes. Further isolated clashes, gunfire, and other security incidents cannot be ruled out. Additional closures and intermittent disruptions to passenger and cargo transport remain possible.
Torkham border checkpoint is around 69 km (43 miles) east-southeast of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, and about 42 km (29 miles) west-northwest of Peshawar, Pakistan.
Advice
Exercise increased caution if operating in and/or near the Torkham border crossing. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately or shelter in place. Do not navigate roadblocks due to the threat of violence. Reconfirm travel arrangements. Plan for lingering transport disruptions and possible ground shipping delays; seek alternative routes and shipping methods for time-sensitive cargo. Carry proper identification documents at all times. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
