Chile: Increased security likely in Bio-Bio Region following Sept. 21 anti-insurgent operation by military and police

Increased security likely in Chile's Bio-Bio Region following Sept. 21 anti-terror operation by government forces.

Informational

Event

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture in Bio-Bio Region over the coming days following a series of anti-terror operations on Sept. 21. A force of 140 police officers supported by military units conducted operations in Los Alamos, Caillin, Canete, Curanilahue, and Huentelolen targeting members of armed groups that claim to fight for a Mapuche indigenous homeland. At least 11 people were arrested in the action, including nine alleged members of Lafkenche Mapuche Resistance (Resistencia Mapuche Lafkenche, RML), one of the most violent armed groups in Chile. A police officer and a former police officer accused of passing sensitive information to RML were also apprehended.

A heightened police and military presence will likely remain in place throughout Bio-Bio Region, and especially in Arauco Province where the arrests took place. The RML is particularly strong in and near the province's town of Tirua, and security personnel may mobilize to the area. Clashes between security forces and militants are possible, especially if RML members who remain at large attempt to launch retaliatory attacks in response to the arrests.

Advice

Exercise extreme caution if operating in affected areas of Bio-Bio Region. Heed the instructions of security personnel. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building.
