Protesters are reportedly blocking roads with debris in various parts of Goma, North Kivu Province, as of early Sept. 18. Initial reports indicate roads are being blocked in Majengo, Katoyi, Virunga, Ndosho, and part of Kyeshero. Activists are demanding authorities release demonstrators detained during violent clashes in Goma on Aug. 30 before the burial of individuals killed during the incident should occur. Security forces are deployed to remove the debris.
Heightened security and localized business and transportation disruptions are likely. Further protests and clashes are possible over the coming days.
Context
On Aug. 30, demonstrators attempted to enter the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) base in Goma before being repelled by security forces. At least ten people died in the clashes, and over 150 were arrested. Some reports claim that as many as 48 people were killed in the incident.
