Event

Protests marking the death anniversary of Mahsa Amini are planned in Berlin, Bonn, and Cologne on Sept. 16. Mahsa Amini died on Sept. 16 2022 in Iran, sparking riots and protests against the Iranian regime. To commemorate the anniversary, the following events are planned:

  • Berlin: Gathering at Breitscheidplatz from 14:00.

  • Bonn: Gathering at Altes Rathaus from 15:00.

  • Cologne: Gathering at Ottoplatz from 13:00.

Further demonstrations are likely in other major centers. Protests are also possible at the Iranian Embassy in Berlin, and at the Iranian consulates in Frankfurt and Hamburg. Thousands of individuals could attend the demonstrations.

Authorities are likely to deploy additional police to monitor the rallies. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near gathering sites through the afternoon of Sept. 16. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

Amini died Sept. 16, 2022, after Iran's morality police detained her for allegedly violating the country's dress code and hijab rules. Authorities announced that Amini had a stroke and heart attack while in detention, but her family claimed that she was healthy before her arrest and did not suffer from any preexisting medical conditions. Amini's death became a rallying cry for millions of Iranians who demanded that authorities abolish the Guardian Patrol, also known as the fashion or morality police.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Ensure sufficient time to travel in the affected areas. Plan for increased security and localized transport disruptions near demonstrations. If clashes occur, leave the area immediately. Heed instructions from authorities.
