Warning

Event

Unionized teachers affiliated with the National Coordinator of Education Workers (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabjadores de la Educacion, CNTE) will protest in Mexico City from Sept. 19. The purpose of the action is to demand that the government address the union's various demands, including the hiring of at least 4,000 new personnel in schools. According to organizers, participating teachers will depart Morelia for Mexico City on 50-100 buses at 22:00 Sept. 18. The action will reportedly be indefinite in duration.

Participants have not yet provided specific schedules for protests set to take place but gatherings will take place at the offices of the Secretary of Public Education (Secretaria de Educacion Publica, SEP), Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit (Secretaria de Hacienda y Credito Publico, SHCP), and the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales para los Trabajadores del Estado, ISSSTE).

Previous similar gatherings by the CNTE have drawn several thousand participants. Heightened security and associated transport and business disruptions are likely around demonstration venues. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Heed instructions from authorities. Allow additional time to reach your destination if traveling near demonstration venues. Leave an area at the first sign of unrest.
