Niger: Suspected militant attack leaves at least 10 dead in Tillaberi Region's Kandadji area Sept. 28; increased security likely

The Nigerien military will almost certainly maintain an increased security posture near Tillaberi Region's Kandadji area over the coming days after a suspected militant attack left at least 10 military personnel dead and several others injured early Sept. 28. Reports indicate the Nigerien Armed Forces (FAN) responded to the attack with ground and air forces. While no group immediately claimed responsibility for the incident, militant jihadists are suspected.

Authorities could impose enhanced security measures, including movement restrictions, vehicle checks, curfews, and/or bans on public gatherings. Further armed attacks and clashes are possible.

Kandadji is about 190 km (118 miles) northwest of Niamey.
