LGBTQ groups to hold Pride Parade in Belgrade Sept. 9. The annual Pride week is ongoing, Sept. 4-10, with the main march taking place from 16:00 Sept. 9. Attendees will gather in Manjez Park, and follow a route along Nemanjina Street, Kneza Milosa Street, Kralja Milana Street, Nikola Pasic Square, National Assembly, Kneza Milosa Street, Nemanjina Street, and return to Manjez Park. Organizers expect thousands to take part, based on previous events.
Counterprotests are likely. In 2022, thousands of activists gathered to protest against the Pride Parade, and the Serbian president banned the march, before the prime minister permitted it to continue amid high security. Police arrested over 60 counter-protesters for throwing projectiles. Similar scenes are likely for the 2023 event.
Heightened security measures and related localized disruptions are likely in Belgrade in coming days. Protests, counterprotests, and clashes are possible. Any violence presents an incidental risk to bystanders.
