South Africa: Tshwane Municipality suspends bus services in Pretoria as of Sept. 14

Bus services suspended indefinitely in Pretoria, South Africa, as of Sept. 14, following the torching of municipal vehicles.

Warning

Event

The Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality has announced the indefinite citywide suspension of its A Re Yeng and Tshwane Bus services as of Sept. 14. The suspension follows repeated acts of violence by striking public servants against busses; at least four municipal vehicles were set on fire on Sept. 13. It is unclear when bus transport will resume.

Increased demand for other means of transport, including buses and private hire vehicles, is likely until buses resume operating. Further violence targeting other public services and transport remains possible.

Advice

Confirm all ground travel arrangements in Pretoria area for the duration of the strike and suspension. Plan for increased employee absenteeism. Allow extra time to reach destinations, and seek other modes of transport if necessary. Avoid all protests.
