Belgium: Public transport workers to strike and protest nationwide Oct. 5; march planned in central Brussels
Unionized public transport workers to strike, protest nationwide in Belgium Oct. 5; march planned in central Brussels from 10:00.
Event
Unionized public transport workers and activists plan to strike and protest across Belgium Oct. 5. The action is to denounce a proposed law that would place greater restrictions on protests. Authorities expect widespread public transport cancellations, and in some regions over half of scheduled services may be cancelled.
Striking workers and activists also plan to hold a protest march in central Brussels from 10:00. Participants will gather at the office of the Minister of Justice at 50 Boulevard du Jardin Botanique/50 Kruidtuinlaan. Demonstrators will then march to the Ecolo, Groen, Socialist (PS), and Vooruit party headquarters near Place Rouppe/Rouppeplein. It is unclear how many participants may attend.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely along the march route. Isolated clashes between protestors, law-enforcement officers, and frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out. Additional demonstrations are possible in urban centers across the country.
Advice
Avoid demonstration areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from authorities. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any potential security disturbance may occur. Monitor public transport authorities' websites for updated disruption information.
