Bulgaria: Miners and energy workers to protest nationwide Oct. 12

Groups representing miners and energy workers plan to protest across Bulgaria from 18:00 Oct. 12 to denounce the proposed closure of coal plants. Protestors began a national road blockade Sept. 29 that has largely dissipated but still continues in some rural areas. Labor unions representing miners and energy workers are also gathering signatures to determine whether or not to launch a nationwide strike. The largest demonstration will likely occur in Sofia, where participants will gather at Nezavisimost Square from 17:00; protest locations for other large cities have yet to be announced. It is unclear how many participants the various gatherings may draw.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that take place. Demonstrations are particularly likely in urban centers and on major highways. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers are possible.
