Canada: Lingering public transport disruptions likely in Toronto, Ont., due to network-wide failure affecting Canadian National Railway Oct. 3

Lingering public transport disruptions likely in Toronto, Canada, due to network-wide outage affecting Canadian National Railway Oct. 3.

Warning

Event

Public transport disruptions are likely in Toronto, Ontario, and surrounding areas through at least late Oct. 3 due to a network-wide system failure affecting the Canadian National Railway Company (CN). All GO trains and UP Express trains were reportedly stopped or heading toward the nearest station to hold there as of the afternoon of Oct. 3. GO Transit authorities have advised customers to "consider alternative travel options," and officials at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) said that passengers planning on traveling to YYZ "may need to find an alternative way to get to the airport" due to the network outage. The network failure had not caused any disruptions to flight operations at YYZ as of around 15:00.

Authorities did not immediately indicate when regularly scheduled train services would resume. Residual train disruptions are likely even after the failure is resolved and all systems resume operation.

Advice

If operating in the Toronto area Oct. 3, consider making alternative travel arrangements if necessary. Confirm private transportation bookings. Allow additional time to reach your destination. Monitor official updates issued by area transit authorities.
