Warning

Event

Various groups are planning to stage a strike and several demonstrations in Hanover Oct. 21.

  • Unionized rail workers affiliated with the German Locomotive Drivers' Union (GDL) will hold a warning strike 02:30-14:30 to demand higher wages and better working conditions; service on S-Bahn trains will be suspended during this time frame.

  • Activists demonstrating under the slogan "Peace, freedom, sovereignty for all peoples of the world" will march from Kropcke to Steintorplatz from 13:00. The demonstration is slated to end at 18:00.

  • Activists affiliated with the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany (MLPD) will hold a protest march through the city center starting at 14:00 from Ernst-August-Platz and ending at the same site at 17:00. Demonstration organizers did not immediately publish a specific march route.

  • Activists affiliated with the German-Israeli Society will rally at Georgsplatz 15:00-17:30.

  • Activists affiliated with the Palestinian Community of Hanover group will rally at Opernplatz 15:00-17:00.

Heightened security and disruptions to vehicular transport are likely near all demonstrations. S-Bahn disruptions may continue for several hours after the strike ends. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between rival activists or between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in Hanover Oct. 21 and consider taking alternative routes. Seek alternative forms of transport to mitigate the personal impact of the scheduled S-Bahn train disruptions. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
