Myanmar: Disruptions due to flooding ongoing across Bago Region and Mon State as of Oct. 10

Disruptions due to flooding occuring across Bago Region and Mon State, Myanmar, as of Oct. 10. Evacuations ongoing.

Warning

Event

Flood-related disruptions due to heavy rainfall are ongoing across parts of Bago Region and Mon State as of Oct. 10. The Bago River has overflowed, flooding 12 neighborhoods and seven villages. Authorities state that the adverse weather has displaced more than 14,000 people in Bago Region across 36 emergency shelters and almost 1,000 others in Mon State across three emergency shelters. Many roads and rail lines in the affected areas are impassable due to the floodwaters, including those connecting Yangon with the affected areas. Widespread showers and storms are forecast across much of Myanmar over the coming days.

Further sustained heavy rainfall will likely trigger additional flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also probable in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Landslides are likely in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rain has saturated the soil.

Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are probable where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.

Floodwaters and debris flows will likely render additional bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Severe weather will probably trigger flight delays and cancellations at airports in the affected regions. Authorities will likely temporarily close some low-lying routes inundated by floodwaters. Localized business disruptions are probable in low-lying areas.

Although a secondary concern, disease outbreaks are possible in the coming days and weeks. Backflow from drains mixed with floodwaters can become trapped in open areas when inundations recede. These stagnant pools often become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and bacteria, increasing the incidence of insect- and waterborne diseases. Exposure to contaminated water from inundated industrial sites, sewer systems, and septic tanks also poses a significant health threat.

Advice

Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments prior to travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays, as well as potential supply chain disruptions, where flooding has been present. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages. Observe strict food and water precautions, as municipalities could issue boil-water advisories following flooding events. Take precautions against insect- and waterborne diseases in the coming weeks. Keep any necessary medications in a waterproof container.
