The Nigerien military will almost certainly maintain an increased security posture near Tahoua Region's Tabatol village, located in the Takanamat valley, over the coming days after a suspected militant attack left at least 29 military personnel killed and two others injured on Oct. 2. Reports indicate the Nigerien Armed Forces (FAN) were attacked by suspected militant jihadists while returning from a security operation. Authorities declared three days of national mourning following the incident. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the incident.
Authorities are likely to impose enhanced security measures, including movement restrictions, vehicle checks, curfews, and/or bans on public gatherings in the affected area. Further armed attacks and clashes are possible.
Takanamat is located about 59 km (36 miles) northwest of Tahoua.
