Sri Lanka: Teachers to stage protests outside schools nationwide from 13:30 Oct. 27
Teachers to protest outside schools across Sri Lanka from 13:30 Oct. 27. Tight security likely; transport disruptions possible.
Teachers affiliated with the Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) plan to stage protests outside schools across Sri Lanka from 13:30 Oct. 27. Participants are calling for better pay and working conditions. The largest demonstrations will likely occur in urban centers such as Colombo, Kandy, and Negombo. Additional possible protest sites include government buildings, prominent roadways, and monuments. Dozens to hundreds of people may participate in each protest.
Authorities used tear gas and water cannons to disperse a related gathering outside the Ministry of Education in Colombo Oct. 24.
A heightened security presence is likely around demonstration venues. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible. Clashes may break out if police forcibly disperse crowds.
Avoid all protests as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Monitor trusted local sources to remain apprised of gatherings in your area. Heed all official traffic and security advisories. Leave the area immediately if violence breaks out, and seek shelter at a secure nongovernmental building.
