Dominican Republic: Civil society groups to strike across El Cibao region Nov. 13

Activists to strike in El Cibao region, Dominican Republic, from 06:00 Nov. 13; increased police presence, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Civil society groups Affiliated with the Coalition of Popular Organizations of Cibao ( La Coalicion de Grupos Populares y Sociales del Cibao) have announced that they will strike across the Cibao region starting at 06:00 on Nov. 13. The purpose of the strike is to denounce the government's economic policies. Organizers have called for the complete cessation of all financial, commercial, transportation, and industrial activities. Strike-related marches, rallies, and roadblocks are also planned during the labor action.

Related gatherings are likely to result in transport and business disruptions in multiple areas, including the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, the region's economic center. While demonstrations are likely to be largely peaceful, there will probably be an increased police presence near rally sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to disperse crowds forcibly.

Avoid any strike-related demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Seek alternative routes to circumvent protest-related disruptions. Do not attempt to drive through any protester-erected roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential demonstration sites. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
