Further disruptions to the electrical supply in Goma, DRC, are possible in the coming days as of Nov. 7 due to conflict-related insecurity.

Informational

As of Nov. 7, further disruptions to the supply of electricity in Goma are possible in the coming days due to conflict-related insecurity. The electricity supplier for North Kivu Province, Virunga Energies, announced Nov. 6 a temporary restoration to the electrical supply following clashes between the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and M23 rebels in Nyiragongo territory. Reports indicate that an unidentified ordnance struck a medium-voltage line supplying electricity between Rutshuru and Goma in Nyiragongo. Virunga Energies has requested a security corridor to access the damaged infrastructure in Kibumba. It remains unknown when full restoration of the electrical network will resume.

The electricity supply disruptions could extend beyond the estimated power restoration time. Transport disruptions are possible in areas subject to malfunctioning traffic signals. Localized business disruptions are also possible in impacted areas.

Charge mobile and communication devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Plan for road travel delays due to possible malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights in affected areas. Exercise caution when driving in the impacted areas. Verify that security systems are working. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel equipment where necessary.
