Guatemala: Activists to continue demonstrating in Guatemala City through at least late November

Activists to continue demonstrating in Guatemala City, Guatemala, through at least late November. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Opposition activists and indigenous groups plan to continue protesting in Guatemala City through at least late November to demand compliance with the 2023 presidential election results and the resignation of Attorney General Consuelo Porras.

Indigenous groups, who have been demonstrating for weeks in the capital, have vowed to continue protesting until president-elect Bernardo Arevalo is sworn in. Indigenous groups have mostly been gathering outside government buildings, including the Congress of the Republic. Other likely gathering locations for demonstrators include:

  • Calzada Roosevelt below the Periferico bridge

  • Ruta al Atlantico, in front of Portales Mall

  • Calzada Aguilar Batres, below the Periferico bridge

  • Bulevar Vista Hermosa, in front of the Multimedica Building

On Nov. 18, student groups also plan to gather along Avenida Petapa near San Carlos de Guatemala University from 09:00 and march to the Congress of the Republic on 9A Avenida; the exact march route remains unclear.

The events will probably draw large crowds and cause significant transport and business disruptions in Guatemala City. Heightened security is likely along the march routes and outside government buildings; clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Confirm appointments in advance if operating in Guatemala City, as ground transport is likely to be significantly affected in downtown areas. Plan for extra travel time if traveling near the affected areas. Strictly heed instructions from authorities.
