Guatemala: Protests, clashes ongoing in central Guatemala City as of early Nov. 16 in response to alleged political corruption

Protests, clashes occurring in Guatemala City, Guatemala, as of early Nov. 16 in response to alleged corruption. Avoid the area.

Warning

Demonstrations and clashes between political activists and riot police are ongoing in central Guatemala City near the National Congress as of early Nov. 16. Participants have reportedly hurled stones at politicians leaving Congress and tried to prevent one lawmaker from entering her vehicle.

Tight security is likely across central Guatemala City, as are localized transit and business disruptions. Further violence may occur; vandalism is also possible.

Avoid protest-affected areas as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Monitor local news sources for further information. Plan for localized transit and business disruptions throughout central Guatemala City. Strictly heed the directives of authorities. If clashes occur nearby, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernment building.

Related mass protests have occurred since at least late September, with participants demanding the resignation of politicians seen as obstructing the inauguration of President-elect Bernardo Arevalo, who won the Aug. 20 presidential election.

While Arevalo is supposed to assume presidential duties in January 2024, there are several judicial investigations against him and his allies. The Electoral Supreme Court Nov. 2 suspended the legal status of the Semilla Movement, Arevalo's political party, following requests from the Attorney General's Office and a judge.
