Protests, clashes reported in Balkhu and Tinkune areas of Kathmandu, Nepal, Nov. 23. Transport disruptions ongoing. Avoid the areas.
Rival supporters of the opposition Communist Party of Nepal (CPN-UML) and businessman Durga Prasai are protesting in the Balkhu and Tinkune areas of Kathmandu afternoon Nov. 23. Prasai was a former CPN-UML supporter but left the party because of allegations of financial misconduct by party members and disagreements over governance. Hundreds of people are participating in the demonstrations. Clashes reportedly occurred between rival supporters in the Trikune area, but police have brought the situation under control. Traffic disruptions are also ongoing in the affected areas.
Authorities are imposing prohibitory orders in parts of Kathmandu and have banned gatherings at several locations including residences of government officials, the UN building, the National Human Rights Commission, and areas near significant establishments. Supporters may defy gathering bans and stage additional demonstrations over the coming days.
Authorities have deployed additional security personnel at protest sites and potential gathering locations across Kathmandu. Demonstrators will likely march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Associated localized business disruptions are likely. Further clashes with security forces, opposing rival activists, and other forms of violence cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the impacted area due to the possibility of violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near the incident site. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
