Slovenian authorities extend tightened controls at Croatia, Hungary borders, through mid-November. Plan for security checks, delays.
Authorities in Slovenia have extended enhanced border controls at crossings from Croatia and Hungary, through at least Nov. 19. Local authorities have increased police numbers at frontier crossings, and have stepped up identity documentation checks. The temporary measure was introduced Oct. 21, and then extended on Oct. 31. Officials state that the measures are to counter potential terrorist and extremist groups attempting to enter Europe from areas of armed conflict, and in response to a rise of organised crime in the western Balkans.
Individuals traveling via land attempting to cross borders from Croatia and Hungary to Slovenia will likely encounter border crossing delays while heightened controls remain in effect.
Allow additional time if crossing from Croatia and Hungary to Slovenia. Keep important travel documents on hand and be prepared for potential inspections. Strictly heed all instructions issued by local officials.
Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia are members of the Schengen zone for free movement; in normal circumstances, ID documentation is not checked at frontier crossings. However, countries have the right to impose temporary enhanced measures in response to security concerns.
