Sudan, South Sudan: Heightened tensions likely in Abyei Region, disputed by Sudan and South Sudan, after tribal fighting leaves at least 32 dead Nov. 19

Elevated tensions likely after tribal clashes in Abyei Region, disputed by Sudan and South Sudan, leaves at least 32 people dead Nov. 19.

Warning

Heightened tensions are likely in Abyei Region, a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, after tribal clashes left at least 32 people and wounded dozens of others Nov. 19. Officials have accused members of an armed youth group from Twic community in Warrap State, South Sudan of carrying out the raid in several areas, including Angath, Wunpeth, and Korioch; no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) deployed to the area following the clashes.

Increased security measures are likely in the impacted areas in the coming days. While peace has reportedly been restored, further violence can not be ruled out. Should any violence occur, officials could impose movement restrictive measures, including curfews.

Exercise caution if operating in Abyei Region. Travel only in convoy and during daylight hours. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions.
