DRC: Heightened security likely following armed attack in Kwero area, Ituri Province, overnight Dec. 2-3
Heightened security likely around Kwero, Ituri Province, DRC, after suspected militants kill at least 10 people in area overnight Dec. 2-3.
Heightened security measures are likely in the vicinity of Kwero, Ituri Province, over the coming days after suspected Cooperative for the Development of the Congo (CODECO) militants killed at least 10 people and injured several others in the area overnight Dec. 2-3. The militants reportedly also attacked the neighboring villages of Pigwa and Nzonzo and stole goods and livestock. Kwero is located on the border between Djugu and Mahagi territories, approximately 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Bunia.
Similar attacks are possible in the area over the coming days. Officials could implement movement restrictions, including curfews and vehicle checks, on short notice in areas subject to militant violence.
Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in the affected area. Travel in convoy and during daylight hours only. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
The threat of militant violence is severe in eastern regions of the DRC despite the implementation of a state of siege in Ituri and Nord-Kivu provinces and ongoing security operations by Congolese and Ugandan forces in border areas. Fatal attacks and kidnappings are regularly carried out by some of the numerous armed groups operating in the east of the country. Further attacks are likely in the coming weeks and months.
