DRC: Opposition candidates call for protest in Kinshasa Dec. 27

Opposition candidates plan protest election-related in Kinshasa, DRC, Dec. 27. Increased security, disruptions likely; violence possible.

Warning

Some opposition candidates have called for a protest in Kinshasa on Dec. 27. Participants will gather in front of the Martyr Stadium and march towards the electoral commission (CENI) along June 30 Boulevard. Organizers have yet to announce a specific gathering time and march route. The purpose of the action is to denounce alleged irregularities during the Dec. 20 general election, including the extension of the votes beyond Dec. 20 due to logistical issues, among others. It is unclear how many people will attend the protest.

An increased security presence and localized traffic disruptions are likely along the march route. The potential for clashes with security forces or rival activists that may attend is elevated.

Avoid the protest locations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling through Kinshasa on Dec. 27. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately. Heed instructions from authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
