Guatemala: Activists likely to continue protesting in Guatemala City through at least mid-December /update 1

Activists likely to protest in Guatemala City, Guatemala, through at least mid-December; major transport and business disruptions likely.

Warning

Opposition activists and indigenous groups will likely continue protesting in Guatemala City through at least mid-December to demand compliance with the 2023 presidential election results. President-elect Bernardo Arevalo has called on his supporters to stage a related march on Dec. 7. Participants will reportedly gather outside the Supreme Court of Justice building in Guatemala City from 08:00 and march toward the Constitutional Court and Public Ministry buildings. The march is likely to be well attended.

Indigenous groups have been demonstrating for weeks in the capital and have vowed to continue protesting until Arevalo is sworn in. Protesters have mostly gathered outside government buildings, including the Congress of the Republic. Other locations where demonstrators are likely to gather include the following sites:

  • Calzada Roosevelt, below the Periferico bridge

  • Ruta al Atlantico, in front of Portales Mall

  • Calzada Aguilar Batres, below the Periferico bridge

  • Bulevar Vista Hermosa, in front of the Multimedica Building

The events will probably continue to draw large crowds and cause significant transport and business disruptions in Guatemala City. Heightened security is likely along march routes and outside government buildings; clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Confirm appointments in advance if operating in Guatemala City, as ground transport is likely to be significantly affected in downtown areas. Plan for extra travel time if traveling near the affected areas. Strictly heed instructions from authorities.
