Increased security likely in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, following clashes early Dec. 1. Further violence possible.
A heightened security presence is likely in Bissau over the coming days following clashes overnight Nov. 30-Dec. 1. Gunfire broke out near a barracks in Santa Luzia District after members of the National Guard released two government ministers being detained at the headquarters of the Judicial Police. Members of the Presidential Palace Battalion responded, clashing with National Guard personnel early Dec. 1. Later in the day, a military spokesperson said that the situation is under control and the National Guard commander reportedly involved in the incident is being detained, along with several other personnel.
Increased security patrols are being reported in the capital as of late Dec. 1. Further security measures are possible, such as checkpoints, along with residual business and transportation disruptions. Additional violence is possible.
Exercise extreme caution if operating in Bissau. Heed all official directives. Avoid government buildings, security installations, and large concentrations of police and soldiers.
