Hungary, Ukraine: Unionized truck drivers stage protest and blockade at Zahony-Chop border crossing point from Dec. 11

Unionized transport workers stage protest and border blockade at Zahony-Chop crossing point between Hungary and Ukraine from Dec. 11.

Warning

Unionized Hungarian truckers affiliated with the Association of Hungarian Road Transporters (MKFE) are conducting an indefinite protest blockade at the Zahony-Chop border crossing with Ukraine from Dec. 11. The purpose of the demonstration is denounce increased competition with Ukrainian cargo drivers, who currently may cross the EU borders without permits until June 30, 2024. This action follows related blockades in recent weeks at Polish-Ukrainian and Slovak-Ukrainian border crossings.

Extensive cargo crossing delays are almost certain to impact the border crossing for the duration of the protest. Increased security is likely near the protest location. The blockade will likely result in transport disruptions on nearby roads and increased congestion on alternative routes. Crossing delays are likely at the other Hungarian-Ukrainian border crossings due to increased traffic. Temporary goods shortages are possible. While the action will likely remain peaceful, low-level confrontations are possible.

Avoid the demonstration area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time to clear Hungarian-Ukrainian border crossings. Strictly heed all instructions from authorities.
