Niger: Activists plan protest in Niamey Dec. 9

Activists plan demonstration in Niamey, Niger, Dec. 9 to demand the removal of regional sanctions. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Informational

Activists associated with the Patriotic Front for Sovereignty (FSP) plan to stage a demonstration in Niamey Dec. 9. Participants plan to gather from Tuomo Square and march to the Escadrille Roundabout located near Diori Hamani International Airport (NIM). Demonstration organizers did not immediately specify the planned time at which the march would begin or how many people would participate in the protest. The purpose of the protest is to demand the removal of regional sanctions imposed on the country following the July coup, the disengagement of regional organizations, and denounce alleged French influence in the country among others.

Heightened security, as well as transport and business disruptions, are likely in affected areas. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest as a standard precaution. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel are deploying. If clashes break out nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
