Poland: Protests possible in urban centers nationwide through at least early January /update 3

Protests denouncing firing of public television leaders possible in urban centers across Poland until at least early January.

Informational

As of Dec. 26, occasional protests could continue through early January following demonstrations at Telewizja Polska (TVP) offices in cities across Poland. Activists began protesting at TVP offices Dec. 19 following the firing of TVP leadership and the shutdown of TVP outlets. New leadership and management for TVP have been appointed, allowing for new programming. Protests have occurred in Bialystok, Kielce, Krakow, Lodz, and Warsaw. The largest gatherings have occurred at the TVP Headquarters (17 Woronicza Street) in Warsaw; low-level confrontations reportedly occurred after demonstrators entered the TVP building Dec. 19. Law enforcement officers remain deployed to monitor TVP offices and respond in case of protests.

Demonstrations are possible at TVP offices in urban centers and may form quickly and unexpectedly. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all main TVP sites. Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid affected area as a standard precaution. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
