Turkiye: Activists plan demonstration in Istanbul Dec. 10

Activists plan pro-secularist protest in Istanbul, Turkiye, from 14:00 Dec. 10. Heightened security likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with several Alevi Institutions and associations plan to protest at Kadikoy Square in Istanbul's Kadikoy District from 14:00 Dec. 10. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce alleged rising religiosity in the state education system and call for increased state secularism. It is unclear how many participants may attend.

Heightened security is almost certain near the demonstration site. Localized transport disruptions are likely near Kadikoy Square, including at Kadikoy Station, Kadikoy Pier, and the Kadikoy bus depot. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Kadikoy Square. Consider altering metro, ferry, or bus plans to avoid the demonstration area. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
