Austria: Activists staging protest march in central Vienna Jan. 19
Activists marching in central Vienna, Austria, Jan. 19. Heightened security, localized transport disruptions likely.
Activists are staging a protest march in central Vienna as of late afternoon Jan. 19. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce the Turkish army. Participants assembled at Dr. Karl-Renner-Ring in the city's District 1 at 17:30 before beginning their march to Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz. The event is slated to end at about 18:30. Authorities estimate about 200 people to take part in the demonstration and have closed the Opernring from the intersection with Operngasse.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the march route. Some lingering disruptions are possible after the demonstration ends. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Vienna. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
