Brazil: Activists plan to gather in multiple urban centers on Jan. 8

Activists will gather in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jan. 8 on anniversary of Congress riots; demonstrations possible in Brasilia.

Warning

Activists plan to gather in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro on Jan. 8, and demonstrations are likely in Brasilia to mark the anniversary of Brazil's Congress riot. Groups opposing the attacks on government buildings will gather from 17:00 outside the Museum of Art of Sao Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) on Avenida Paulista in Sao Paulo and at Cinelandia Square in central Rio de Janeiro.

Gatherings are also likely in Brasilia, and over 2,000 police officers will maintain heightened security around government buildings, especially outside the Congress, where President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will host an event with government representatives and activists from 15:00 Jan. 8. Possible locations for demonstrations in Brasilia include the Ministries Esplanade (Esplanada dos Ministerios) and the Three Powers Plaza (Praca dos Tres Poderes). Officials will monitor for any potential riots against government institutions, although these are not currently expected.

Localized traffic disruptions and increased security are likely near demonstrations on Jan. 8. Protesters may also gather in other urban centers, especially in state capitals. Counter-demonstrations are possible. While gatherings are likely to pass peacefully, clashes cannot be ruled out.

Avoid protests as a precaution. Plan for extra travel time near government buildings. Heed instructions from authorities.
