Bulgaria: Adverse weather forecast across most of the country through at least Jan. 20

Severe weather forecast across Bulgaria through at least Jan. 20. Hazardous travel conditions likely.

Warning

Heavy snowfall and heavy rainfall are forecast across much of Bulgaria through at least Jan. 20. Hazardous travel conditions are likely due to reduced visibility and slippery roads.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued the following weather warnings across the affected area Jan. 20:

  • Orange snow warning (the middle level on a three-tier scale): central and western Bulgaria.

  • Yellow snow, rain, and wind warnings: across the rest of Bulgaria.

Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

Snow accumulations are likely across parts of the affected area. Lesser snowfall totals are possible where sleet and freezing rain mix with snow. In addition to the heavy snow, strong wind gusts could lead to periods of blowing and drifting snow. Blizzard conditions are possible. Sporadic power outages may occur throughout the affected area.

The winter weather will likely cause ground transport disruptions in the affected area. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are probable along regional highways. Hazardous driving conditions are likely due to slippery roads and reduced visibility. Authorities will probably close stretches of highways if driving conditions become too dangerous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area. Flight delays and cancellations are likely due to ground stops and deicing operations at regional airports.

Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall is forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations in these areas and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable. Plan accordingly for delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
