DRC: Further violence possible following militia attack in Kwamouth Territory, Mai-Ndombe Province, Jan. 23
Further violence possible following fatal militia attack in Kwamouth Territory, Mai-Ndombe Province, DRC, Jan. 23.
Further violence remains possible across Kwamouth Territory, Mai-Ndombe Province, following an attack in the area. Assailants, reportedly belonging to the Mobondo militia, attacked the Fadiaka locality at around 04:00 Jan. 23, leaving at least 11 people dead and properties either looted or destroyed.
The recent attack follows an uptick in violence in the region. Effective Jan. 3, local authorities prohibited passenger and freight transport operators from using National Route 17 (NR-17), linking Kinshasa and Bandundu, citing the ongoing threat posed by the Mobondo militia. The militia has recently engaged in acts of sabotage on commercial transport vehicles, contributing to a worsening security situation in the region. It remains unknown when authorities will ease the ban.
An increased security presence is likely, particularly in the territory and along the RN17. Officials could implement further movement restrictions depending on operational needs and developments related to militant activity. Militia activity may disrupt passenger and freight traffic along other regional routes. Residents could mobilize to protest the security measure should goods shortages occur.
Avoid the impacted area until the situation fully stabilizes. Consider alternative travel routes. Heed the directives of local officials. Coordinate travel with a trusted local contact. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions.
