DRC: Heightened security likely following armed attack in Mweso, Masisi Territory, Jan. 24
Heightened security likely in parts of Masisi Territory, DRC, after suspected militant attack in Mweso on Jan. 24.
Heightened security is likely in parts of Masisi Territory through at least the end of January after unidentified militants reportedly killed at least 19 people and injured 17 others in a Jan. 24 attack on the town of Mweso. According to local sources, many of the casualties resulted from bombardment during clashes between government forces and the attackers. Although no group has immediately claimed responsibility for the assault, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) assert that the incident was the work of the Tutsi-led M23 militia.
Further violence and attacks are likely as government forces attempt locate and apprehend the attackers. Officials in the DRC could implement movement restrictions, including curfews and vehicle checks, in the impacted area.
Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in the affected area. Travel in convoy and during daylight hours only. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
The threat of militant violence is severe in eastern regions of the DRC despite the implementation of a state of siege in Ituri and North Kivu. Fatal attacks and kidnappings are regularly carried out by the numerous armed groups operating in the east of the country. Militants typically employ significant and indiscriminate violence in such assaults, and foreign nationals may be targeted due to the perception that they are wealthy and vulnerable.
