Germany: Rail strike to continue through Jan. 12; international services with Luxembourg disrupted /update 2

Rail strike by German union disrupts international rail travel with Luxembourg as of Jan. 10; widespread domestic rail disruptions ongoing.

Warning

The German Locomotive Drivers' Union (GDL) strike has impacted international rail services between Germany and Luxembourg as of Jan. 10. Rail officials in Luxembourg state all international rail services with Germany will be canceled for the duration of the strike. Railway workers affiliated with the GDL plan to continue observing strike action nationwide until 18:00 Jan. 12. The GDL is demanding improved wages and reduced hours for workers.

The strike is impacting freight and passenger services in Germany, including those scheduled to cross the border into Luxembourg. Widespread rail transport disruptions are likely during the strike period. Increased demand for alternative transport is likely. Available rail services will likely experience increased congestion. Disruptions to some services may continue in the hours following the end of the industrial action. Protests are possible at transport hubs. Heightened security may accompany any protests that materialize.

Reconfirm all rail travel. Consider taking alternative transport methods if booked to travel by train during the strike period. Allow additional time for vehicular transport. Avoid all areas that are subject to related protest activity. Heed instructions from authorities.

A previous GDL strike on Nov. 15-16 resulted in 20 percent of scheduled services operating. A further strike on Dec. 7-8 also caused significant network disruptions.
