Guatemala: Increased security, protests likely nationwide as of late Jan. 14 due to uncertain presidential inauguration /update 1
Heightened security, demonstrations likely across Guatemala as of late Jan. 14 due to uncertainty surrounding presidential inauguration.
Further heightened security and demonstrations are likely nationwide, particularly in Guatemala City, due to the uncertainty surrounding the inauguration of President-elect Bernardo Arevalo as of late Jan. 14. The inauguration ceremony and celebration were scheduled for 15:00 Jan. 14, but debates in Congress have delayed these events. In response, supporters of Arevalo have clashed with police and attempted to push through barricades toward the Congress building in Guatemala City. Police have deployed additional riot police in response. Arevalo has announced through social media that he is already the president of Guatemala, even without the inauguration ceremony.
Increased police presence will likely remain in place around several main buildings in central Guatemala City. Demonstrations nationwide may lead to transport and business disruptions. Counter-demonstrations opposing the incoming president are possible. Clashes between security forces and protesters are possible.
Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Plan for business and transportation disruptions into early Jan. 15. Confirm all transport arrangements and allow additional time to reach destinations. If violence occurs, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernment building.
Incumbent President Alejandro Giammattei of the Vamos party and his government have been opposed to President-elect Aravalo since the elections in 2023. Opponents of the government have accused Giammattei and his supporters of working to prevent the appointment of Aravalo to the presidency.
