Increased security, large gatherings likely for presidential inauguration in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Jan. 14.
Guatemalan authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture, and large gatherings are likely for the presidential inauguration ceremony on Jan. 14. There will be celebratory performances for the inauguration from 14:00 at Iglesia de San Francisco in Paseo de La Sexta, 15:00 at Teatro Lux, 16:00 at Plaza Vivar, and 17:00 on Paseo de La Sexta. Finally, President-elect Bernardo Arevalo will give his inauguration speech at Parque Central from 18:00. An increased police presence will be in place around several main buildings, including Teatro Nacional, Plaza de la Constitucion and Palacio Nacional de la Cultura.
Heightened security and transport and business disruptions are highly likely throughout the city as large crowds are likely to gather on Jan. 14. Demonstrations opposing the incoming president are unlikely but cannot be entirely ruled out.
