Guatemala: Protest ongoing outside the Constitutional Court in downtown Guatemala City, Jan. 18
Opposing groups protest outside the Constitutional Court in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Jan. 18. Further disruptions likely.
Supporters and opponents of the national government have launched protests outside the Constitutional Court (Corte de Constitucionalidad, CC), along 11 Avenida, in downtown Guatemala City, on Jan. 18. The demonstrations are due to a recent CC decision demanding Congress to elect new leaders, due to the alleged illegality of the leaders selected on Jan. 14.
Reports indicate there have been skirmishes between opposing groups in the area, and police are separating both groups. Protests are likely to continue through at least late Jan. 18 and may extend into Jan. 19, depending on whether current leaders of Congress accept or reject the court's order. Demonstrations are possible in nearby locations, including the National Congress. Clashes between opposing groups and between demonstrators and police can occur.
Avoid all protests as a precaution. Heed instructions from authorities. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating in downtown Guatemala City on Jan. 18.
