Islamic State claims responsbility for two Jan. 3 bombings that killed 84 people and wounded 280 others in Iran's Kerman Province.
On Jan. 4, the Islamic State (IS) militant group claimed responsbility for the twin Jan. 3 bombings in Iran's Kerman Province; the attack killed 84 people and wounded 280 others. According to officials, the blasts, which took place 10 minutes apart from each other, were caused by two explosive devices that had been placed in the Takht-e-Dargah Gholi Beyg and Jabaliyeh Historical Dome areas near the late Major General Qassem Soleimani's burial site in Kerman. Both areas are located near Kerman Martyrs' Cemetery. Authorities had initially said that 103 people were killed; however, they later adjusted the number of casualties.
The explosions occurred as thousands of mourners had gathered in Kerman to pay their respects on the fourth anniversary of Soleimani's death.
Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are likely across Iran over the coming days and weeks. Authorities have already heightened security measures along Iran's borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan to preempt further attacks.
